I did attend a "regional burn" called Lakes of Fire in Michigan, back in 2011 and 2012. It was a good time. Though most folks I knew from that scene either moved on with jobs and families or burnt out thoroughly, pun intended. For me now having to attend one of those four day gatherings at age 42 with a good job sounds like a nightmare.
I was inspired to learn firedancing before I even knew about Burning Man. Back in like, 2008, strangers would see me perform in the Midwest and say things like: "Do you know about Burning Man? You should go to Burning Man, there are a lot of people like you that go there."
No coffee (yet), but I wonder if you meant 1999, not 1989. 1989 = The Man burned without us on Baker Beach. No sign of all the 1999 things then, though an astute attendee (or founder) could have seen it coming.
